Improving Digestive Health For A Healthier Life

February 23, 2018 by inx Medical

Good digestive health is essential for overall health: It helps us absorb nutrients and expel waste from our bodies, leading to better health. If you find your digestive health isn’t as good as it used to be or simply want to keep it in tip-top shape, following these simple lifestyle changes can help improve your digestive health:

Eat Healthy

Eating healthy is the cornerstone of good digestive health. Getting enough of the right nutrients like fiber (both soluble and non-soluble), protein, carbs, healthy fats, and lean meats will help your body get the nutrition it needs and help regulate your digestive system.

Get Daily Exercise

Daily exercise is an excellent way to help improve digestive health. Swimming, biking, and other light exercises can stimulate the intestinal muscles and strengthen abdominal muscles, making digestion more efficient.

It is important to note that some digestive disorders and side effects like acute gastritis and diarrhea can occur with hard training. However, these downsides are far outweighed by the benefits of daily exercise.

Have Good Bathroom Habits

Having good bathroom habits are also key in promoting digestive health and preventing conditions like hemorrhoids from forming. So remember to:

  • Avoid straining
  • Avoid sitting for longer than 5 minutes
  • Prop your feet up to go
  • Go as soon as you feel the need

Break Bad Habits

If you smoke or drink excessively, it is best to break these habits to help your digestive health. Smoking especially negatively affects your digestive system (as well as your overall health), and can lead to conditions like cancers of the mouth, rectum, stomach, esophagus, and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

If you already suffer from heartburn or another condition like ulcers or Crohn’s Disease, these habits can aggravate them.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Water not only keeps you hydrated, but helps keep your digestive system on track. Water is pulled into the colon by fiber to create softer, bulkier stools that are easier to pass, preventing constipation. It will also help your body flush waste more efficiently, as well as promoting skin health, energy, and preventing cramps.
